A First-Timer's Guide to York

The Shambles — York's medieval shopping street

If you're joining the York → Edinburgh tour, we always recommend arriving in York the evening before. It gives you time to settle in, explore one of England's most beautiful cities, and arrive at the meeting point relaxed and ready.

Where to stay

York is compact and walkable, so anywhere within the city walls is convenient. For easy access to the meeting point, look for hotels near York Railway Station or the Minster. There are excellent options at every price point — from boutique B&Bs in the medieval quarter to larger hotels near the station.

What to see in an evening

Walk the city walls. York has nearly three miles of intact medieval walls — the most complete in England. The stretch from Bootham Bar to Monk Bar gives you elevated views of the Minster and the old town. It takes about 20 minutes and is magical at sunset.

Stroll The Shambles. This narrow medieval street of overhanging timber-framed buildings has barely changed since the fourteenth century. It's busier during the day, so an evening visit gives you the best photos and atmosphere.

Visit York Minster. Even from the outside, the Minster is breathtaking — the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. If you arrive early enough, check the opening times for Evensong, which is free and atmospheric.

Where to eat

York has a thriving food scene. For a relaxed pre-tour dinner, try one of the pubs along Fossgate or Micklegate — both streets have excellent options ranging from traditional Yorkshire fare to modern British cooking. If you want something quick and casual, the street food stalls at Shambles Market are worth a visit.

Getting to York

York is around 2 hours from London King's Cross by train, with frequent services throughout the day. If you're driving, there are several park-and-ride options on the outskirts of the city. We're happy to help with travel advice when you book — just ask.
